One of the main monasteries in Lhasa, Sera Monastery has accommodation for many monks.

The majority of the temple buildings seemed to be full of ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts (sadly we were not allowed to take photos in most of the interiors of the temples), which no doubt play a supporting role in what the monastery is particularly famous for - daily "debates".

The monastery is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet.

The origin of its name is attributed to a fact that during construction, the hill behind the monastery was covered with blooming wild roses (or "sera" in Tibetan).
